How does RED 4K Digital Cinema compare to 35mm film?

Most 35 mm film outs that have gone through a scanning process have been scanned at 2K, or one quarter the resolution of RED's 4K image. Only extremely high content VFX work is generally scanned as high as 4K. Viewers that see REDfootage for the first time either describe the quality as 65 mm film or "grainless 35mm".

The RED 4K captures images in 4K, 3K and 2K resolutions with frame rates from 1-120 frames per second depending on the resolution selected. This completely digital acquisition pipeline produces beautiful, crystal clear images that can be used in every production from Feature and Indie films, advertising/commercials and marketing to HD broadcast and HD digital signage/display. Typical high-end HD cameras have 2.1 million pixel sensors, RED offers the Mysterium Super 35mm cine sized sensor, which provides over 12 million pixels delivering a resolution that can only be called ultra high definition. RED looks, feels and acts like a film camera with standard ASA settings, over and undercranking, and time lapse contol. Matched with a 35mm PL lens mount, it allows us to take advantage of the world's finest optics and produces an image far superior to 35mm film without the additional costs associated with film.
